The Flop and Beyond

Playing a full house
When the board is paired it is quite common for two or three people to make a full house by the river. For this reason you need the best full house to win e.g. if the board is K-T-7-2-2 you want to have kings full of twos. It is true that you could win with tens full of twos or sevens full of twos but in these situations you will want to be careful that someone does not have you beat. Against several opponents which will be the case most of the time, to play a hand like twos full of kings or the like is just suicide, there are just too many ways you are beat.

Having re-draws to better hands
Sometimes and probably more often than you might think, two people will both make the nut straight. However, one player may be actually be a favourite over the other. For example you have J-T-9-8 and your opponent has 9-8-5-2. The flop comes J-T-7 giving you both the nut straight but you also have two pair, jacks and tens. Now if another jack or a ten comes you will make the better hand. So even though on the flop you both have the current nuts you actually have four outs that will win you the whole pot. This is why you want all four of your hole cards working together.

Two pair
As stated before, you only want to be playing the nuts or drawing to the nuts. Occasionally two pair will win if you are against one or two opponents, but it is just not worth playing it at loose pot limit Omaha games because many people will be seeing the flop meaning you will need a much stronger hand than two pair to win. Two pair is also not a good drawing hand because you only have 4 cards that can improve it to a full house. Therefore two pair should be routinely folded.

Final notes
Most of your profits in pot limit Omaha come from opponents who play hands that are less than the nuts. By following this strategy you will ensure that you are always playing very strong hands while your opponents are playing weaker hands. E.g. you will have a an ace high flush while your opponent will pay you off with a jack high flush, or you will have the nut straight while your opponent has a lower straight.

Once you get a feel for the game it is pretty easy to start playing more than one table at a time. Most online poker rooms allow you to play at 3 tables simultaneously, so you can potentially win three times as much in the same period of time. To maximise profits you want to play at poker rooms with the easiest opponents. Proceed to the next page to find where to play.
